How to find your elevation

Three steps from your location to your elevation.

  1. Step 1

    Enter your location

For your current location, your browser will ask for permission. Your location is only shared if you allow it.

  2. Step 2

    We look up the height

We look up the height in open elevation data and, for your current location, the place name.

  3. Step 3

    See your elevation

The result is your elevation above sea level. Tap or click to switch between meters and feet.

Elevation vs. altitude: What’s the difference?

Elevation is the height of a point on the Earth’s surface above sea level, while altitude is the height of something above sea level. If you’re standing on the ground, elevation and altitude are the same, but if you rise above ground level (for example in a plane or elevator), they’re different.

Altitude Here shows your elevation: it takes your location or a point on the map and returns how high the ground is at that point.

How the lookup works

The site looks up a position in the sources shown above to return the result. We don’t store your lookups on our server, and your saved readings stay in your browser.

If you click Show my altitude, your current location is shared once as a set of coordinates. If you click Track live, the site keeps using your device’s location services (GPS, Wi-Fi, or cell towers) and looks up the elevation again each time you move more than 25 meters, and otherwise up to once every 10 seconds, until you click Stop tracking.

Your current location will depend on your device’s positioning accuracy (including GPS), which can vary with your signal and near buildings. On a steep slope, even a small position error can change the elevation.

Elevation and altitude questions

Why can’t I share my location?

Your browser may need permission to access your location. Check your system settings and enable location services for your browser app, and allow location for this site in your browser. If you change a system setting, quit and reopen the browser, then try again. You can also enter coordinates or tap the map instead.

How do I find my elevation on Google Maps?

Open Layers in Google Maps and choose Terrain to see contour lines with their heights, but not the elevation of a particular point. Altitude Here shows the number directly.

Can my phone tell my elevation?

Some phones can: on an iPhone, the Compass app shows an elevation. Otherwise, your phone knows its position thanks to GPS, Wi-Fi, and cell towers, but you need a tool like this page to find the elevation at that position.

Is my location sent anywhere?

Your current location is shared once for each Show my altitude request to return the height, the place name, and the map from the services in our Privacy Policy. With Track live, it is shared again with each new elevation lookup, until you click Stop tracking. Saved readings stay in your browser.

Why is my elevation different in a different app?

Apps use different height data and find your position in slightly different ways, so a difference of a few meters is normal, and can be more on steep slopes or indoors. Our lookup uses the Copernicus DEM, which is open elevation data measured from satellites. It has one height value about every 90 meters.

Does it work without GPS?

Yes: you only need an internet connection. If you don’t want to use GPS, enter your coordinates manually or tap the map to see the elevation of that point.

I took the elevator. Why didn’t my result change?

The page shows your elevation, which is the height of ground level, not your height in the air or on an upper floor.
