Privacy Policy
Last updated: November 2, 2026
This privacy policy explains how we handle information when you use altitudehere.com.
Summary: Altitude Here runs in your browser. There are no accounts, cookies or ads. To show an altitude, your browser sends the position you look up to the services that provide the height, the place name and the map. Cloudflare delivers the pages and shows us visit statistics, and our web server keeps IP addresses in its logs for 60 days. We don’t sell data.
1. Who We Are
- Operator: Burak Ozdemir

2. Your Location
You can share location data with the site in three ways:
- As your device’s location, when you press “Show my altitude” or “Track live”. Your browser asks for permission first. If you do not allow it, no location is read. You can withdraw the permission at any time in your browser settings. With “Track live”, your browser sends the position again each time you move more than 25 meters, and otherwise up to once every 10 seconds, until you press “Stop tracking” or close the page.
- As coordinates, when you type them or tap a point on the map.
- As a shared link that contains coordinates (see section 8).
Your browser sends the latitude and longitude of the position you share directly to the services shown in section 3. These lookups do not pass through Cloudflare or our server. The only exception is a shared link: its page address contains the coordinates, so it reaches Cloudflare and our server logs like any other page address (section 8).
3. Services That Receive Your Position
Like every web request, each request below also gives the service your IP address and your browser’s user agent. Each service is an independent controller: it decides itself how it uses the data that it receives, under its own privacy policy.
- Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) returns the elevation. It receives the latitude and longitude of every lookup. See the Open-Meteo terms and privacy policy.
- BigDataCloud (bigdatacloud.net) returns a place name, such as a city and a country. It receives the latitude and longitude only for your device’s location: once when you press “Show my altitude”, and again with each new elevation lookup while “Track live” is on. It does not receive typed coordinates, map points or shared links. BigDataCloud states that it uses the position together with the IP address of the request to improve its IP location data, and that it does not link this data to identifiable people. See the BigDataCloud privacy policy.
- OpenFreeMap (openfreemap.org) provides the map. Your browser loads the map tiles for the area that you view, so OpenFreeMap can see which area that is. When the map moves to your position, this area shows approximately where you are. See the OpenFreeMap privacy policy.
4. Server Logs
Our web server (nginx) stores IP addresses, browser user agents and the requested page addresses in log files for security purposes only (to prevent abuse and block malicious traffic). These logs are deleted automatically after 60 days.
5. Content Delivery (Cloudflare)
Cloudflare delivers this website from servers near you and protects it against attacks. Every request for a page of this website passes through Cloudflare, so Cloudflare receives your IP address, your browser user agent and the requested page address, including the coordinates of a shared link (section 8). Cloudflare also asks your browser to report failed connections to Cloudflare (Network Error Logging), so that network problems can be found. From these requests, Cloudflare shows us statistics such as visits per page or per country. Cloudflare sets no cookies on this website. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
6. Data Stored in Your Browser
Altitude Here saves these items in your browser’s local storage:
- Saved readings: the time, latitude, longitude and elevation of each reading that you save, and the name that you give it.
- Unit: meters or feet.
- Theme: light or dark.
This data stays on your device, and we never receive it. To delete one reading, use its Delete button. To delete all readings, use the “Clear all” button (trash icon) and confirm. To delete everything, clear the site data for altitudehere.com in your browser settings.
7. Cookies, Ads and Your Data
This website sets no cookies and shows no ads. We run no advertising trackers, we do not sell your data, and only the services named in this policy receive it.
8. Shared Links
The Share button creates a link that contains the coordinates of a reading, for example
/?lat=35.67620&lon=139.65030. When someone opens such a link, the page looks up the altitude of
that point with Open-Meteo (not BigDataCloud), and the page address, with the coordinates, reaches
Cloudflare and our server logs like any other page address (sections 4 and 5).
9. Legal Basis
Your browser sends a position to Open-Meteo and BigDataCloud only when you ask for an altitude or open a shared link, so that we can show the result you requested (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). For your device’s location, you also give your consent in your browser’s permission prompt (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR). OpenFreeMap receives the map area that you view, based on our legitimate interest in showing the map (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). We use Cloudflare, with its visit statistics, based on our legitimate interest in delivering the website, keeping it secure and knowing how it is used, and we keep server logs based on our legitimate interest in keeping the website secure (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare, Open-Meteo, BigDataCloud and OpenFreeMap can process the data they receive in countries other than yours, also outside the EU, under the safeguards described in their own privacy policies.
10. Your Rights
The only information we hold about you is in our server logs (your IP address, browser user agent and the pages you requested, for up to 60 days) and any email that you send us, which we keep only as long as we need it to answer you (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Under data protection laws such as the GDPR, you have the right to:
- Ask what information we have about you
- Ask us to correct or delete it
- Ask us to restrict how we process it
- Object to how we process your data
- Withdraw your consent for your device’s location at any time, in your browser settings
- Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority
To use these rights, or for any question about your data, email contact [at] ozdemir [dot] dev.
11. Changes to This Policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version on this page and update the date at the top.
